HISTORY and ATMOSPHERE: Aikido
of Jacksonville was founded in 2000.
We train in a small
office/warehouse location in Jacksonville's Southside. Class sizes
average between 8 and 12 students, which enables students easy access to
senior instructors. Our custom
cross-linked polyethylene
foam mat flooring provides
an ideal surface for safely practicing falling skills. Climate control is limited in the Summer and Winter, so classes in the
Summer can be very warm, and classes in the Winter can be very cold.
This gives a unique facet to our training reminiscent of traditional
Japanese dojos in the days before central heat and a/c. Instructors
and students train hard, while maintaining positive and friendly attitudes
absent of conflict and machismo found in many other schools.
CURRICULUM:
Shinzui Aikido is one of the most practical martial arts for self-defense because it
combines effective aikido principles with proven physical techniques in
a multitude of combinations and scenarios.
We utilize a proven training
methodology that yields results in students of all abilities.
Students begin by learning proper warm-up exercises followed by aikido
body movements, falling methods, and techniques. Concepts include
proper distancing, proper timing, control, and focus in addition to the
aikido philosophies of non-resistance and harmony. Students are
taught mental and physical perspectives on martial strategies.
Physical techniques include joint locks, immobilizations, throws, chokes,
knife defenses, multiple attack defenses, etc. Criteria for
promotion are strict, and we only test once or twice per year. In
other words, this is not a belt factory.
INSTRUCTORS:
Our instructors have logged hundreds of training hours, and have proven
their aikido proficiency under strict guidelines. Their goal is to
facilitate continued student growth while maintaining a safe training
