AIKIDO

Aikido is a Japanese martial
art developed by a man name Morihei Ueshiba, who is commonly referred to
as O'Sensei or "Great Teacher". O'Sensei studied a multitude of
martial arts throughout his lifetime which ultimately led to the
development of the aikido which has gained popularity on an
international basis since O'Sensei's death in 1969.
Because O'Sensei taught
thousands of students throughout his lifetime, aikido can vary in look and
feel depending upon who the instructor is, who he or she trained under, at
what point in O'Sensei's life that a particular instructor studied, and
the instructor's personal beliefs on how the art should be practiced.
Therefore, there is value to prospective students in knowing the history
and lineage of the art they choose to study. This will help them to
understand that there are often significant differences in aikido styles.
The aikido taught at Aikido
of Jacksonville focuses on practical application of technique integrated
with traditional aikido philosophies including those of traditional
Japanese budo. We believe that techniques should be practiced in a
way that gives the student the highest probability of success if attacked
on the street. While aikido techniques can be very flowing and
graceful, our aikido is not a dance.
Traditional Japanese
Jiu-Jutsu
Sensei Lambert and three of his
students were honored to have been taught numerous basic techniques in
traditional Japanese Jiu-Jutsu during the Elite Budo Seminar in Kyoto,
Japan in August, 2009. These jiu-jutsu styles included Shinden-ryu
Jiu-Jutsu, Yanage-ryu Jiu-Jutsu, and Shibukawa-ryu Jiu-Jutsu. The
Chief Instructors of these ryu-ha have been very gracious in allowing us
to bring these techniques back to the U.S. to teach. As such,
students of Aikido of Jacksonville will receive instruction in traditional
jiu-jutsu from time-to-time as a compliment to their normal aikido
training regimen.
